Medicine of the highest order.
There’s been some summer produce creeping into my diet. Beautiful, sun ripened organic fruit and veggies from my glorious garden.
It hasn’t gone well.
Most of you know I don’t eat anything other than nose to tail, pastured animal products and it’s been a wonderful, healing protocol for me (and many, many others). But the siren song of my garden and that glowing fruit called and I’m still paying the price.
It shouldn’t be this way, a little hormetic stress should just be a little nudge, not a gut wrenching, mind fogging, emotional downward spiral. But that’s just what it is for some. For me.
I think solely eating animal products has been a phenomenal, nutrient dense diet for me, but I still want to get to the root of the matter. To that end, I continue to work with a couple of phenomenal doctors to see how far we can get with the underlying issues I clearly have. It’s all in my gut. Despite decades of eating a nutrient dense, traditional food diet high in animal fat and void of grains and sugar, there’s still work to do.
I don’t just want to avoid dealing with the underlying issues by sticking with a solely animal based diet, BUT if it turns out that I never get to a point of incorporating plants back into my diet, but that means I am living in a vital, thriving, body and mind, I’m ok with that, too.
To live without pain after all those years is such a gift.
It may just be that a babe fed soy formula and a childhood on constant antibiotics means I will forever have limitations that have to be managed. We’ll see.
In the meantime, my gratitude runneth over. That the foods that heal me are the most nutritious, sumptuous foods on the planet and that they are the foods that heal said planet and the bodies that roam on it, well.. my oh my, how bloody great is that?
On the plate: six week dry aged ribeye from our steer, Bud, that we raised and harvested right here on our farm. Add to that, the same animal’s liver, topped with smoky lardo, cooked in that same animal’s tallow. I think there’s something to eating all the parts of the same animal together. All enjoyed with a steamy cup of beef bone broth simmered with chaga.
