A big question I frequently get is how to eat well on a budget.
We’ve been farming for awhile now, but we weren’t when our two older daughters, now 26 and 22, were little. No, we relied on a few things to source nutrient dense foods on our, then, meagre budget.
First: Buying in bulk. That means we set aside a set amount of money every month throughout the year so we could buy all of our animals, by the whole, in the fall when they were fresh off plumping on vibrant, nutrient rich pastures. I needed all of those organs, bones, and fat and couldn’t afford to buy cuts of meat.
Tip: chest freezers can be bought for a song second hand. Even our daughters have small ones in there tiny apartments.
Second: Priorities, my friend. We drove a little, cramped car that we stuffed all five of us into. We borrowed movies and books from the library. Played board games. Spent every minute outdoors. Clothes were bought vintage and second hand (still are, actually). Food was number one and remains so.
Third: Buying clubs. If there wasn’t one in a place we moved to, we started one. This would include raw milk and other dairy buying clubs, organic produce, meat buying clubs, natural product co-ops, and as you can see in this picture here, even organic fruit buying clubs. I’ve been running this organic fruit group for about twelve years now. I developed a relationship with an organic fruit grower in our region. A couple times a summer, I bring luscious juicy fruit for our group that’s preserved or eaten straight up. Fruit in winter is an oxymoron normalized by profiteers. Don’t do it.
There’s more things, of course, including cooking your food to utilize all parts, learning how to stretch a meal, avoiding restaurants and convenience foods, etc.. I will get more into that in my upcoming chat with the ever-brilliant @drbillschindler on his exciting new summit that I will tell you more about soon.
Oh, if you are curious about what’s in our five freezers, or was in there (I update ever fall after harvest), you can check out slowdownfarmsteadfreezers
